Leadership in a Growing Business

As businesses move from the start-up stage to a more strategic and sustainable growth phase, business owners are often faced with the challenge of adjusting their leadership style and the “fly-by-the-seat-of-pants” company culture. Entrepreneurs realize the fact that they either have to learn new skills or bring in outside experts to assist them with the transition. In our view business leaders of a growing company should focus on three key points:

1) Delegating Responsibilities
A business will move at the speed of a run-away train once it gains momentum. Many business owners we have helped will testify to that. It is crucial for hands-on entrepreneurs to delegate everyday operational tasks to experienced and qualified professionals so they can focus on making strategic decisions. Conducting leadership training programs is a good way to ensure there are always suitable managers available within the company resource pool who can step up and share greater responsibilities.

2) Focusing on Strategic Goals
Leaders must have a 360-degree bird’s eye view of their business for setting a strategic direction. By prioritizing strategic goals it is possible to achieve future success and growth within a quick timeframe. Using the right communications channels and structured systems in executing strategic plans, leaders can create a cohesive team that delivers on the tasks rather than assigning them randomly without achieving the desired results.

3) Motivating Team Members
People are one of the most important assets of a growing company. It is crucial for leaders to establish a “team” culture early-on for the organizational machine to run well. It is invaluable for a company to have every individual understand how their role directly contributes to the overall success of the company. Organizational development and team building programs will help the business be more effective in the long run.
